Encouraging teenagers to complete high school and giving them access to careers counselling are key to plugging the yawning skills gap and enabling Australia to combat a raft of economic challenges, the Business Council of Australia says.
Year 12 retention rates have dropped to 79 per cent, the lowest in 12 years. Those students who leave school miss out on the option of undertaking further study at university or technical colleges.
