Is a university degree still worth it?
The pay premium for graduates is on the decline, while the sector is a mess and academics are asking whether we have reached ‘peak university’.
In the ponds outside the entrance to the chancellery building at Australian National University there are a handful of fake orange goldfish. Not so long ago, a dozen or so majestic koi – real ones – swam among the lily pads and reeds.
For historian Hannah Forsyth, who has written the definitive book on the history of higher education in Australia, these fake fish are a metaphor for the modern university.
