Speaking truth to Trump not as easy as Turnbull says

Australia’s leaders simply cannot ignore the possible implications for the US alliance when crafting their public rhetoric about the serving commander-in-chief.

The spat between Malcolm Turnbull and Donald Trump has not garnered the same global attention that the infamous Oval Office clash between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did. Yet, there are some parallels to draw.

Zelensky’s criticism of Trump’s plan to negotiate a peace deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war proved counterproductive for his country’s interests. Similarly, it is not in Australia’s best interests for a former prime minister to be publicly at odds with the current American president.
