Malcolm Turnbull has angered Donald Trump with a poorly timed critique of the mercurial US president, undermining efforts by the Albanese government to get a tariff exemption amid increasingly vocal demands from Washington that Canberra spend more on defence.
Trump branded Turnbull “weak and ineffective” after the former Australian prime minister said China would take “massive advantage” of the president’s chaotic approach to foreign affairs and warned US tariffs were “bad for business” and could plunge the US into recession.
