Disagreeing with Xi will be the real test of China ties

Albanese’s overly diplomatic tone risks casting Australia as deferential to the Chinese Communist Party, and inadvertently playing into Xi Jinping’s charm offensive.

During his six-day trip to China, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese trotted out the well-worn Labor line: “We will co-operate where we can, disagree where we must and engage in our national interest”, which aptly summarises his attempts to walk a diplomatic tightrope with our largest trading partner.

Yet what the longest visit by an Australian leader to China in living memory tangibly means for the nation and our security is debatable.
