What Labor got wrong about non-competes

Protecting low-paid childcare workers, yoga teachers and hairdressers makes sense, but the devil is in the detail.

In an unsurprising announcement in Tuesday night’s budget, the treasurer signalled that post-employment non-compete terms would no longer be enforceable for employees earning under the high-income threshold of $175,000 per annum (excluding superannuation, commissions and bonuses).

The justification for this change is that it will apparently boost wages, productivity and innovation by allowing greater job mobility.
