'Wage theft' is just part of the bill for complex workplace laws
Moral panics about employers exploiting underpaid workers are absurd. The real problem is with Australia's confusing industrial award system.
David LeyonhjelmColumnistWoolworths is the latest employer to be caught out for paying its workers less than what the law says they should be paid. It has joined the growing list of companies that almost daily are either making a public confession or being outed by the Fair Work Commission, with backpay and fines in the millions of dollars.
In fact, there are so many cases that it has been described as a crisis and the government is talking about “doing something”, such as making it a criminal offence with imprisonment as a penalty. With paedophile priests and cyber bullying now last year’s news, it is fast becoming the new moral panic.
