Retail sales rocketed in February as shoppers shrugged off any remnant of omicron caution to push spending to the second-highest level on record and almost 20 per cent higher than pre-pandemic levels.
But floods across the eastern seaboard and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine later in the month will hamper future growth, with inflation pushing up the price of goods and petrol prices reaching record highs in March.
