Qld asks Chalmers to rethink GST so it doesn’t pay for Vic mistakes

Queensland Treasurer David Janetzki has written to his federal counterpart Jim Chalmers asking for a rethink of the latest GST carve-up among states, which shaved more than $2 billion off his state’s share while handing the Victorian government almost twice that amount.

The letter is a further sign of growing disquiet in NSW and Queensland about the distribution of GST funds after they became the only two states to have more income flowing out than in under the federally administered system, and debt-laden Victoria used the bulk of its windfall on handouts rather than repairing the budget.
