A few years ago, inspectors from the late Building and Construction Commission came across a tearoom at Monash University used by construction workers.

The walls were plastered with pro-union posters, including one that said: “We support John Setka,” the union leader who had turned the CFMEU’s Victorian construction division into a powerful industrial and political force.
