JobKeeper worked, but the bill is unpaid
The Albanese government has still not squared up to the fiscal policy challenges left by the pandemic.
JobKeeper was the centrepiece of the Morrison government’s massive fiscal support during the pandemic, and often the most controversial. Now an independent evaluation of the $89 billion wage subsidy and income support scheme by former senior Treasury official Nigel Ray has concluded that it worked in its core objective of reviving precious economic confidence at a moment when there was almost none to be had.
