Price cuts for popular groceries are helping reduce inflation and undercut a political push to stamp out alleged price gouging by the supermarket giants.
The moderation in grocery prices was a key reason annual headline inflation was a softer-than-expected 4.1 per cent. Meat and seafood combined, and fruit and vegetables, were both 1.2 per cent cheaper in the December quarter, according to official inflation figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
