Victoria’s Premier insists Melbourne’s strict lockdown will get COVID-19 cases back to zero, but delta makes this year look very different to last year.

For all his lectures to Gladys Berejiklian on how to manage a real lockdown, Dan Andrews is now facing the uncompromising reality of the delta variant. Lockdowns, no matter how hard, no matter how soon started, do not guarantee a return to zero cases.

The result is that although Victoria’s cases are much lower than NSW, and will probably remain so, both are in the same miserable position of indefinite closure.
