ACCC’s former top enforcer issues warning over merger laws

The competition watchdog’s former chief enforcer Liza Carver has warned rules for Australia’s new merger regime are too complex, create serious risk and will spark a wave of lawsuits in the Federal Court.

Carver, who left the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in mid-May, led both its enforcement and mergers committees during her tenure. She said rules published on Monday would in effect subvert the intent of the Albanese government’s merger reforms.
