Scott Morrison will not be fazed by the NSW Coalition government’s decision to increase the ambition of its 2030 emissions reduction target from 35 per cent to 50 per cent because it will help him commit the nation to net zero emissions by 2050.
It suggests that Australia is set to announce at November’s UN climate summit in Glasgow that it is on track to improve on its comparable Paris emissions targets of 26 per cent to 28 per cent. And the NSW Nationals’ backing of the state’s more ambitious emissions reductions suggests there is a political pathway to getting a majority of federal Nats on board the 2050 target.
