Why this executive finds diving so addictive

Sharks, whales, submarines and shipwrecks – marketing agency boss Emma Burdett has encountered them all. It’s a sport that never gets boring. She answers our Time Out Q&A.

“Diving offers a sense of tranquillity, weightlessness and mindfulness that’s hard to match,” says Emma Burdett, managing director of Huddle Up Creative.

Emma Burdett is managing director of the marketing agency Huddle Up Creative and co-founder of the Future Female Leaders Program, a mentorship initiative for young women in Western Australia. She lives in Perth.

How long have you been scuba diving?
Growing up in New Zealand, spending time in and on the water was second nature, so becoming a certified diver felt inevitable. As a university student on a budget, the only way to afford to dive regularly was to work in the industry. In 2007, I signed up for all courses necessary to become an instructor, even before getting Open Water Diver certification. By 2009, I was a certified instructor, and I’ve been going on diving adventures around the world ever since.
