In 2022, Maile Carnegie, who runs ANZ’s Australian retail banking business, told a room of 200 of her colleagues that she was having a hot flush.

Presenting at a town hall meeting during the initial stages of ANZ’s $4.9 billion acquisition of Suncorp, Carnegie, the former chief executive of Google Australia, was seeking to pump up the confidence of key staff from both sides working on the deal.
