When Kenya’s Brimin Misoi broke the record for the Sydney Marathon in two hours, six minutes and 17 seconds on Sunday, his heart would have temporarily swollen by about 15 per cent.

That’s roughly the extent to which our hearts expand when we go from sitting down to racing in an event like a marathon – and it’s far from the only cardiovascular change that occurs.
