Surfing has made this wellness entrepreneur a student of the sea

Understanding currents – and when to be wary of sharks – is central to the skills David Altamura has learnt riding waves for three decades. He answers our Time Out Q&A.

If conditions are right, David Altamura will drop what he’s doing and head out to catch a wave. 

David Altamura is the co-founder and CEO of health and wellness centre Wildsoul Wellness and owner fitness studio Globe Athletic. He lives in Mordialloc, Victoria.

How long have you been surfing and how did you get into it?
I’ve been surfing for 30 years. After finishing university, I travelled and landed in Byron. Needless to say, learning to surf in Byron is almost obligatory. I worked at the Byron Bay Swimming Pool as a swim teacher, and the guy who ran the pool, Greg “Baz” Daniels, encouraged me to surf with him after work. Baz was a local icon, so we were always given right of way at the Wreck, the local break, located just behind the pool.
