Broken your New Year’s resolutions already? Here’s your next move

If you’ve failed to live up to your saintly intentions, don’t despair: you can still get back on track by setting realistic short-term goals.

Glinting with bright possibilities, January is hailed as the month of radical transformation. It’s the time of new dawns, hard penance and risible attempts at sobriety, when you steel yourself to reset your life trajectory in a more positive direction. This will be the year you finally conquer those grisly vices, clean up your diet and never drink before 6pm (OK, maybe 4.30pm). Unfortunately, back in the real world, the odds are stacked against us. A 2020 study by fitness app Strava found that almost 80 per cent of people who make a New Year’s resolution will abandon it by January 19.

If this all sounds grimly familiar, don’t abandon hope just yet. Veteran personal trainer Chief Brabon points out that January in Australia is surely the worst time of the year to attack any meaningful lifestyle change.
