At this year’s Oscars, Timothée Chalamet sauntered down the red carpet wearing a yellow leather tuxedo. What dangled from his wrist was equally arresting. He wore a Cartier Baignoire from the 1994 Byzantine collection that measured just 18 millimetres wide. Originally conceived as a women’s design, Chalamet’s watch came on an ornate bracelet studded with diamonds, rubies and sapphires.

Jeff Goldblum bowled up in a white tux, floral shirt and lavender scarf, but it was his watch that really pushed the sartorial envelope. Fastened to his wrist with a purple calfskin strap was a Vacheron Constantin Égérie Moon Phase, a lilac-dialled women’s piece housed in a diamond-studded case. Admittedly, Chalamet and Goldblum are both notorious dandies known for their flamboyant panache. But what’s increasingly notable is that it’s not just the more outré male celebrities that are opting for ladylike timepieces.
