‘I’ve had 1000 watches’: Why this fed-up collector is selling them

It wasn’t that long ago that Chris Gardner could pay $8000 for a gold Jaeger-LeCoultre timepiece or similar for a Patek Philippe. Now, he says, the hype and the prices are out of hand.

Seated at D’Albora Marina in Rushcutters Bay on a sunny Sydney day, Chris Gardener begins pulling from his exercise bag watches you’d die to have on your wrist.

There’s a gorgeous white gold Patek Philippe chronograph, a stunning Cartier Tortue Monopusher, a mint late-1960s Rolex GMT-Master. There’s also a tiny-looking and ancient Citizen, now missing its band, and a similarly strapless group of early Swatches.
