Venerable watchmaker Patek Philippe is no stranger to headlines, and so it was in December when a Tiffany-Blue-dialled Nautilus model sold at auction in New York for $US5.35 million ($6.5 million), with an additional buyer’s premium of $US1.53 million.
Given this was for a watch with a retail price of $US53,000 – if you could actually find one – the headlines were no surprise. But it was another watch announced by the brand in the same month, and available for a tenth of that multimillion-dollar figure, that in horological terms is the scene-stealer – and a noisy one at that.
