Opera chief stares down ‘yellowface’ controversy

Opera Australia artistic director Lyndon Terracini has ruled out making major changes to the company’s presentation of classic works, in his first public comments after a “yellowface” controversy embroiled OA in February.

A patron of OA’s reprisal of Puccini’s Turandot at Sydney Opera House, Vietnamese-Australian lawyer Cat-Thao Nguyen, told The Sydney Morning Herald at the time that she and her Chinese-Canadian husband had been offended by the use of white singers to play the Chinese ministers Ping, Pang and Pong.
