Cairns tourism operators fear they may not have a viable industry to return to unless they receive ongoing financial assistance from the federal government to help them through to the end of the coronavirus pandemic.

With the JobKeeper package to end in March, they argue a tailored wage subsidy scheme is needed for regions such as Cairns that are more exposed to international tourism than holiday spots within driving distance of capital cities.
