Aussie UFC underdog vies for ‘double champ’ status

Pound-for-pound king Alex Volkanovski is battling the odds by trying to dethrone lightweight champion Russian Islam Makhachev.

This weekend Perth hosts one of the most improbable David and Goliath contests in global combat sports history: the diminutive 1.65-metre tall Aussie “pocket rocket”, Alex Volkanovski, 34, the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s No.1 pound-for-pound fighter and featherweight champion, will battle the much taller, stronger and fancied lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, 31.
