Incoming BHP chief executive Mike Henry has vowed to double down on the cost cutting and productivity improvements that have helped turbocharge the resource giant’s returns.

Mr Henry, a 16-year BHP veteran who currently heads the group's Australian mining operations, is seen as a safe but unsurprising internal choice to replace outgoing Andrew Mackenzie, who will retire at the year end after more than six years at the helm.
