Debit surcharge ban unfairly favours major banks, claims Square

Jack Dorsey’s Block has undermined federal Labor’s proposed ban on debit card surcharges warning that it will simply entrench the dominance of the big four banks in the area of payments, making fee bundlers like Block’s Square less competitive.

The blended debit-and-credit merchant rates introduced by Square when it arrived in the Australian market in 2016 have emerged as a flashpoint in the Reserve Bank’s review of payment costs.
