Death knell for card surcharges risks plenty of unintended consequences

How the RBA’s proposed changes work for businesses will rely on banks and terminal operators passing through lower fees. Will they?

The Reserve Bank of Australia’s plan to kill off the often controversial practice of debit and credit card surcharging makes sense on paper, but how it works in practice is another matter.

On Tuesday, the central bank said it wants to do away with surcharging, given it is no longer achieving its intended purpose.
