APRA objects to small bank claims on ‘same’ regulation

The prudential regulator says small banks will not be forced to meet the same liquidity and capital standards as their larger rivals despite claims from the Customer Owned Banking Association that the proposed changes would “erode vital competition”.

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority in November said it would begin consulting on tougher liquidity rules for smaller banks, as it is concerned about avoiding a Silicon Valley Bank-style collapse that could create contagion for the financial system.
