Westpac’s Kiwi caning shows clean-up far from over
Westpac’s risk failures in New Zealand are a reminder that Peter King’s ‘fix, simplify, perform’ strategy isn’t through phase one yet.
It was Westpac chairman John McFarlane who best described the problem with the bank’s great turnaround plan in the letter at the front of this year’s annual report: “Unfortunately, with all transformation programs, as we turn over stones, more issues reveal themselves”.
And most of these issues come back to one thing: risk.
