Express entry into the Cairns Hockey Association A-grade men’s grand final could be up for grabs when Saints and Souths collide in their final match of the regular season on Sunday afternoon.
With just three points separating the top two sides, the results from this weekend’s final rounds are likely to have a major effect on the finals set-up.
Saints currently sit in top spot and will be eager to secure the minor premiership with a pair of wins this weekend.
Even if they drop Saturday’s match against Stingers, a victory in Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash against Souths will be enough to punch their ticket to the grand final.
But, they will be up against a Souths outfit determined to get back on top.
After starting the season with five straight wins, the defending premiers have dropped their last two games, scoring just one goal in the two losses, compared to 12 goals in the five wins prior.
Souths captain Liam Whipp said the return of strikers Ashton Schenk and Mason Bombardieri from injury would provide a boost for the side.

“They are both very dangerous up front,” he said.
In the A-grade women’s, Stingers and Saints are likely to meet in the semi-final, with Souths awaiting the winner.
