A 3pm doughnut pitstop is a must for this fashion entrepreneur

8.30am I take Sunday brunch seriously. Today we went to Maeda in Newtown [Sydney], where I opted for mixed-beans porridge with spiced pear, honeycomb, seasonal fruits and puff barley.

11am Morning tea is usually thrown together with whatever we have in the fridge, in this case heirloom tomatoes with sliced mozzarella and fresh basil from the garden.

1pm Lunch is my favourite meal, and it’s always an event in our house. Today we whipped up fresh-but-filling prawn burgers with lettuce, spring onions and dressing. I’m a casual pescetarian.

3pm A quick pit stop at Grumpy Donuts – a necessary sugar hit for myself and my seven-year-old. As I near the business end of pregnancy, I’ve been making a point of listening to my body and curbing cravings as they arise.

5.30pm Sardines on focaccia to tide me over until dinner. This is one of my go-to snacks – the combination of salt, bread and good-quality olive oil always hits the spot.

7pm We close the weekend by firing up the pizza oven and sticking to simple toppings. With a new family member on the horizon, a calm night at home and an extra dose of family time never goes astray.

Top marks for… Your sardine snack habit. This is one of the best food sources of long-chain omega-3 fats including DHA and iodine, both essential for the infant’s developing brain. Another key nutrient for pregnancy is folate and your bean porridge is a rich source.

If you keep eating like this you’ll… Need to keep an eye on your iron levels. Requirements increase from 18 to 27mg a day during pregnancy and that can be a hard, but not impossible, target to meet without red meat.

Why don’t you try… Making pizza bases with a mix of wholemeal and legume flour. Team your pizza with a salad including dark leafy greens and a source of vitamin C, such as fresh capsicum or orange slices. Include tofu and iron-rich grains such as amaranth or quinoa.
