Japanese$$

Faux Japanese maples and fairy lights make for a pretty scene. Sweet, attentive service pushes things a step closer to warm and fuzzy, and the comfort of dishes such as okonomiyaki - fall-apart savoury pancakes zigzagged with mayo - seals the deal. The best approach here is to order lots of small dishes to share: okonomiyaki, takoyaki (soft-centred spheres with pieces of octopus - another classic comfort), chicken yakitori (teriyaki sticky-sweet skewers), and sushi (baked salmon with a creamy mix of cheese and avocado, perhaps). Take in the Norton Street scene from a table on the front verandah or opt for a more intimate meal inside.
