The new Brighton High School is a step closer to being built, with the state government lifting the veil on design concepts for the development.
Renders prepared by JAWS Architects showcase the prospective school’s “state of the art learning facilities”, as well as its watering hole, wet area, administrative entrance and “Learning Street”.
The Tasmanian Liberals committed to building the $50m school – to be located on Elderslie Rd – in the 2018 election campaign.
Education Minister Roger Jaensch said Brighton High School would cater for up to 600 students across years 7-12.
“The release of the renders is the next step in the detailed design phase, which follows extensive community consultation before and after the release of the master plan last year,” he said.
Construction of the school is expected to begin next year and it’s set to welcome students in 2025.
It will feature a gym and performing arts space, “commercial-style” kitchen, outdoor learning areas, and “extensive” off-street parking.
The Brighton municipality is projected to have the fastest-growing population in Tasmania to 2042.
According to the Education Department, more than 600 students are currently enrolled at the nearby Brighton Primary School, with the majority of Year 6 students either moving on to independent schools or government high schools in Hobart’s northern suburbs.
