A beloved vegetarian cafe has made the difficult decision to close its doors after a decade serving up authentic Indian street food to its loyal customers.
The Soup Stop, situated on the corner of Barrack and Davey streets, closed for good on March 18.
Owners Harcharan Kaur, 55, and Satinder Pal Singh, 59, said they believed it was the right time for them to be moving on.
“Our age was progressing and then health issues were coming up,” Ms Kaur said.
“And also we recently had our grandson. So we needed to give attention to the little baby, too.
“We thought it was time to say goodbye to this business and sit down and have family time and relax and look after the little young one.”
Soup Stop opened in July 2012, and quickly developed a cult following.
“Since we are vegetarian, we wanted to give something which is vegetarian to the people and give them a taste of healthy food and the street food of India,” Ms Kaur said.
“We have very, very loyal customers. It was … a good relationship, a healthy relationship we were able to build with them over the years.”
The announcement of Soup Stop’s closure prompted a number of dedicated customers to pay tribute to their favourite eatery via Facebook.
“I’ve had so many amazing meals here and also brought my friends,” Shirley Chiu said. “Always felt so welcome.”
Ayush Srivastava thanked Ms Kaur and Mr Singh for “serving us with great, delicious food all these years”.
“Soup Stop will be missed in Hobart,” he wrote.
