NOTHING is more Aussie than a hot and hearty pie. Whether you grew up eating them from the canteen, a fan of the servo variety, or a fancier option, the pastry, meat and texture are all fiercely debated. And with winter here a hot pie could not be a more popular choice for this time of year. So here they are — in no particular order — five of the best places for a pie.

Jackman and McRoss, 57-59 Hampden Rd, Battery Point, 4 Victoria St, Hobart, and 32 Cross St, New Town

If meat, meat and more meat wins you over, then you’ll fall in love with this bakery’s pies. The King Island lamb, potato and rosemary is the most popular (takeaway $6.80, dine-in $8.80). The tourists’ favourite is the fresh scallop wakame pie in a light curry sauce (takeaway $9, dine-in $10).

The Port Huon Trading Post, 4478 Huon Hwy, Port Huon

It’s safe to say this is a must-visit stop in the Huon region for Ros’s famous pies. The fresh and crisp pastry is unquestionably what gives these pies the “wow” factor. Favourites include Tasmanian curried scallop ($8.50 takeaway, or dine-in with chips and salad for $15), steak and mushroom ($5 takeaway) and creamy cauliflower and cheese ($4.50 takeaway).

Brighton’s Best Bakehouse, 30 Midland Hwy, Brighton

The bakers here roast a lamb shoulder for 18 hours, along with vegetables on a foundation of red wine, garlic, onions, herbs and seasoning, to create the multi-award-winning and much-loved drunken lamb roast pie. It’s pipped only by the bakery’s slow-cooked beef and caramelised onion which was named the best pie in Australia in 2017.

Jean-Pascal Patisserie, 30 Carlton St, New Town

Dine out at home with a classic beef bourguignon pie — beef braised in red wine with beef broth, flavoured with garlic, onion, carrot bouquet garni and mushrooms, or the cottage pie with its casserole of beef mince cooked in a garlic and tomato sauce with onion, peas, celery and carrot and topped with fluffy mash potato. $19.50 family-size pie feeds 5-6.

Quilted Teapot, 6 Bathurst St, New Norfolk

In the historic grounds of Tasmania’s oldest church, the pies here get big ticks. Feast on a slow-cooked venison in a rich red wine sauce topped with a roasted pumpkin, mangel wurzel and potato mash, served with side salad and homemade relish, or seafood in white sauce, scallops, prawns, calamari and white fish. Pies start at $7.50, or $9.50 with side salad.
