THE innovative world of wellness has introduced a new food trend to cafes over the past few years with colourful latte additions like rainbow, turmeric, matcha and beetroot. On top of those, there are also the lattes that have been tinkered with purely for the sake of flavour. Here are five of the best lattes with a twist.

Macquarie Food Store, 356 Macquarie St, South Hobart

The colourful latte options at Macquarie Food Store are hugely popular. The Velvet Latte ($5) used to be made from a pre-mix, but is now made from scratch, fresh to order. Ingredients include fresh beetroot juice and plenty of spices such as cardamom, ginger, turmeric and pepper. There is also the Golden Latte (turmeric) and the Matcha Latte. The hot beverages are healthy and non-caffeinated.

Kopitiam Singapore Cafe, 86 Collins St, Hobart

Black Sesame Seed Latte ($7) is an uncommon concept in Australia, but not so in Japan. There, it is widely enjoyed, and black sesame seeds are believed to prevent hair from turning grey if consumed from a young age. The owners of Kopitiam import the organic powder from Japan. The drink is healthy and sugar-free and although it is not the first choice of most customers who have never heard of it, the owners say everyone who has given it a go has said it was “very good”.

Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm, 9 Christmas Hills Rd, Elizabeth Town

This summer, two new flavours dropped onto the latte menu at the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm, which is a family-favourite eatery nestled in the countryside by the Bass Highway. Raspberry lattes had already been a long-time star on the menu and now blueberry and strawberry ones have earned their place too. The berries are grown by the business and made into a syrup to be heated with the milk for the lattes ($4.40).

Beach Hut Coffee, 2 Beach Rd, Ulverstone

The popularity of this beachside cafe and eatery in the North-West town of Ulverstone is ever increasing, especially among Sunday lunchers and dog owners. The latte options on the beverage menu include the Turmeric Spiced Latte, the Red Velvet Beetroot Latte, the Green Tea Matcha Latte (all $5.50 regular and $6.50 large) and the Arkadia Chai Latte ($5 regular, $6 large).

Veg Bar, 346 Elizabeth St, North Hobart

The Chilli Cacao Latte at Veg Bar is said to “increase bliss and energise”. It contains raw cacao, chilli and coconut milk. The Golden Latte’s claim is that it boosts immunity, energy and gut health with turmeric, cinnamon, cayenne and coconut milk, while the Matcha Latte, with green tea and coconut milk, is an antioxidant and metabolism-booster. All are $5.70, and you can “ice” any latte with house-made coconut ice cream for an extra $2.
