TASMANIA’S vineyards and wineries are gaining a reputation for fine food as well as the fruit of their vines. Here are five great food experiences at some of Tasmania’s top vineyards.

Josef Chromy Wines, 370 Relbia Rd, Relbia

Under the guidance of executive chef Nick Raitt, the menu here changes seasonally and for some items, daily, to reflect the produce available in their garden and locally. The Art of Sparkling ($235pp) is the signature experience, but there is also a four course sharing menu ($75pp), as well as a full a la carte menu. The most popular dish is without a doubt the wood-fired lamb rump with baby lentils, baked Elphin Grove celeriac, spring onion and labna. ($39)

Coal Valley Vineyard, 257 Richmond Rd, Cambridge

All the dishes here are prepared on site, from scratch, right down to the daily baked bread and homemade ice cream. A feature of the varied menu is the meat slow-cooked in a smoker. This is showcased on the popular hot smoked meat plate with house pickles, house barbecue sauce, sage and onion stuffing, Dijon mustard and coleslaw ($35).

Ghost Rock Winery, 1055 Port Sorell Rd, Northdown

This modern cellar door suits a light lunch and wine tasting. The popular Tasmanian Produce Board ($88) features a selection of meats, seafood, cheeses, pates, preserves, house-made pickled and roasted vegetables, salad greens, served with Pigeon Whole Bakers toasted bread and crackers, suitable for 3-4 persons. There are also locally made cakes and a wine-infused rose jelly with raspberries and sorbet.

Frogmore Creek, 669 Richmond Rd, Cambridge

An elegant yet casual setting allows guests to choose their experience, individual dishes or order a selection to share. The menu’s concept of “Land, Sea and Garden” uses local produce and guests arriving early will often see the staff picking herbs and flowers for the day’s service. Desserts ($16) are popular — they are tasty artwork on a plate. The most popular wine served is Frogmore Creek pinot noir ($68).

Stefano Lubiana Wines, 60 Rowbottoms Rd, Granton

From small beginnings this has grown into a large winery, cellar door and a rustic restaurant known as Osteria with a big kitchen garden supplying most of its produce. Menu highlights include raw hand-dived scallop, honeydew melon, avocado and dill ($22), braised goat cannelloni, tomato ($38), and chargrilled Spanish mackerel, red capsicum, chard ($40).
