These fabulously wholesome, gluten-free, vegan buns are chock-a-block with sultanas featuring lingering warm spices. The bakers are flat out all day at the moment to meet demand for just-out-of-the-oven hot cross buns, which can also be pre-ordered. Buns $3.20 each or $16.50 for half a dozen.

Chocolatier John Zito has created an entire range of exquisite handmade eggs, birds nests and other novelties. He knows how to mark an occasion and the Giant Egg Cracking Day, on April 23 at 11am, rates its own special mention. Of course, a surprise awaits and there is something special in the 1m tall, 40kg egg. Prices from $2 for small eggs to $60 for designer eggs.
Daci & Daci, 11 Murray St, Hobart, and 31-33 New Town Rd, New Town
Naser and Cheryl Daci’s sourdough hot cross buns need to be sampled to be believed. This Hobart patisserie is serving up its brilliant buns full of orange fruity goodness with their own delicate spice blend, topped with lovely choux pastry. Sourdough fans may find it hard to return to traditional buns after one bite. Buns $2.50 each to take away or $4 to dine-in.
House of Anvers, 9025 Bass Hwy, Latrobe
For the personal touch, it is hard to beat handmade truffle eggs from the House of Anvers Anvers Easter range in dark, milk and white signature chocolate. Choose from up to six different flavours that range from Hazelnut, Cointreau, Strawberry, Kirsch and Ganaache to Rum and Raisin. Truffle eggs are priced from $18-$33. Stockists include Salamanca Fresh and Hill St stores.
Federation Artisan Chocolate, 3 Victoria St, Hobart, and 3 South St, Taranna
After 16 years at Taranna, Federation Artisan Chocolate has branched out to Hobart where customers are beating down the doors for their quality handcrafted range. For Easter there is something for everyone — white, milk, dark, vegan, gluten free, sugar-free, unfilled and naughtier filled eggs. Eggs priced from $5, filled $9 and large hollow $17.50.
