Hobart Town Tea Rooms, Shop 1/147 Macquarie St, Hobart
Devonshire teas ($12.50) here look extra special, served on truly elegant fine bone china. This pleasant space in Macquarie St opened five months ago, dishing up a mouth-watering classic menu which includes a selection of scones, dainty open and club sandwiches, Welsh rarebit, frittata, quiches, ham and zucchini slice and cakes and sweets. Group high teas and birthday parties available.
Glen Derwent Tea Rooms, 44 Hamilton Rd, New Norfolk
Step back in time at this historic home set on expansive grounds. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am-4pm for Devonshire teas without a booking ($15 adults, $7.50 children), their scones couldn’t be fresher, made when you arrive and served with homemade jam and whipped cream. With a booking, the menu expands to ploughman’s lunches and high tea.
Succulent, Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Queens Domain, Hobart
Enjoy Devonshire tea ($14.50) with botanical garden views. You’ll get two house-made scones, jam, cream and, of course, tea. If tea is not your bag, they also serve Frangelico affogato and Succulent Irish coffee, wine, beer, softdrinks, milkshakes and juice. The restaurant is open seven days for quick snacks or long lunches, and the shared platter of deli items for $64 is a firm favourite.
Abundance on the Quay, 1/5 Clarence St, Bellerive
This Eastern Shore favourite in the beautiful Bellerive Quay doesn’t do a Devonshire tea package as such, but tea is $4.50 and two scones $9.50. The scones are made daily in their kitchen and served with house-made raspberry jam and freshly whipped maple cream.
They house-bake nearly everything on the menu except the bread.
Hadley’s Orient Hotel, 34 Murray St, Hobart
Sitting in the atrium of one of Australia’s oldest hotels enjoying a delicious Devonshire tea is hard to beat. The beauties served here include come with raspberry jam and chantilly cream. There’s also savoury pumpkin scones with butter and chicken liver pate, for those without a sweet tooth. ($15). The hotel can adapt its scones to cater for most dietary requirements.
