Australia's domestic violence crisis

Steven Paul McIntosh sat with his head bowed as the magistrate read a string of vile messages he had sent to his wife in the days before he savagely beat her.

“You f****** scum, when it comes to dinner I am going to flog you, I am going to blacken your putrid eyes,” the messages read.

“How many times do I have to tell you to shut the **** up, maybe you will learn this time or I will kill you.”

The Toowoomba father, who has a long history violence that is fuelled by his addictions to ice and heroin, sent the message in June of this year.

Less than a month later, on July 25, he flew into a rage after his child wouldn’t stop crying before he attacked his wife.

On Tuesday the Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard he flew into a rage, blaming his wife for not being able to settle their child.

The court heard McIntosh punched his partner in the head an estimated 10 times.

The assault came to the attention of police after McIntosh was overheard saying he “had bashed the daylights out of his wife”.

Police attended McIntosh’s home about 10.30pm and when his wife answered the door she appeared scared, with noticeable bruising to her face.

Police also seized phone records that showed McIntosh had sent a series of vile and abusive text messages in the month before the assault.

He was arrested and charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and two counts of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence.

McIntosh pleaded guilty to all offences on Tuesday.

Defence solicitor Nathan Bouchier told the court his client was born into a dysfunctional family and fostered an addiction to heroin and ice.

He added that McIntosh had developed post-traumatic stress disorder after a serious car crash in 2010.

In sentencing, Magistrate Kay Philipson described McIntosh’s offending as horrendous.

“Not matter what you may think, you have no reason or excuse to speak to someone like that, or threaten to kill them,” she said.

The community is sick of people perpetrating violence in the home.”

McIntosh was sentenced to a year in jail with a parole release date set at October 25.
