Lachlann William Barry damaged two cars in ‘tit for tat’ incidents

The 21-year-old was left with a hefty damage bill and 18 months of probation after pleading guilty before the Toowoomba court.

The 21-year-old pleaded guilty before Toowoomba Magistrates Court to two counts of wilful damage.

A “tit for tat” revenge attack has left a 21-year-old Toowoomba man on probation and almost $2000 out of pocket.

Lachlann William Barry had gone to the Wilsonton home of friends about 7.30pm, May 21, last year, and got into an argument with one of the house occupants.

Told to leave, he was escorted out but before leaving he smashed the rear window of the victim’s car with a tyre lever, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

He had then got into a car to leave but instead reversed into the driver’s side car door of a second victim, smashing that car’s window, police prosecutor Rohan Brewster-Webb told the court.

A couple of hours later police spoke with Barry at a Rangeville residence and though he admitted to the argument he denied causing any damage, Mr Brewster-Webb said.

Barry had then failed to show up at court on June 14 but handed himself into police when he discovered there was a warrant for his arrest, he said.

Barry pleaded guilty to two counts of wilful damage and one of failing to appear in court.

Duty solicitor Phil Stainton told the court the incident was a “tit for tat” with one of the complainants with whom Barry had been having issues and who he claimed had damaged his car in the past.

Magistrate Howard Osborne ordered the convictions not be recorded but placed Barry on 12 months probation, fined him $250 for failing to appear in court and ordered he pay the first complainant compensation of $1137 and the second $500.
