Magistrate Kay Philipson told Temple he was extremely lucky the worker was not gravely injured, however noted the permanently scared man would forever be reminded of the attack.

She said no one should be subjected to acts of violence, especially someone who is trying to do their job.

Ms Philipson said the 48-year-old acted out of character and had significant mental health issues which he was medicated for.

She told Temple he may need to stop drinking if it negatively affects his behaviour.

Temple was ordered to pay $2000 compensation to the worker and was placed on a four month suspended prison sentence.

If he commits another crime within a 12 month period, the four month term may be activated.

A conviction was recorded.
