The Toowoomba Mountaineers women’s side’s season reached an abrupt ending on Saturday as the Brisbane Capitals claimed an emphatic 81-59 victory to advance through to the QSL basketball grand final.

The Capitals showed their class with an impressive four-quarter performance to keep their perfect season on track.

Second quarter run guides Brisbane to grand final

With less than 30 seconds left in the first quarter, the Mountaineers were well and truly in the contest as they trailed 17-14.

However, the Capitals showed their class with a stunning second quarter blitz to almost seal the game before half time.

Brisbane went on a 28-10 10-minute run to flip the game on its head.

The Capitals dominated the quarter in every aspect as they scored more points from turnovers, in the paint, from the bench, on the fast break and on second-chance opportunities to take a 20-point lead at half time.

After an arm-wrestle first quarter where there were nine lead changes, the stunning surge from Brisbane ensured it would hold the lead for the rest of the clash.

Duo lead scoring for Neers

Tall duo Mia Stower and Kim Wilson were the shining lights for Toowoomba offensively as they combined for 24 points on 10-18 shooting.

The pairing have been a perennial threat in the paint this season with Stower averaging 15.67 points and 14.67 rebounds per game – with more than 10 rebounds in every game this season, while Wilson has averaged 7.3 points per game.

Mountaineers punished at the line

With Toowoomba chasing for the majority of the contest, execution at the free throw line was always going to be vital.

However, the Mountaineers did themselves no favours as they shot just six of 16 from the stripe at 37.5 per cent.

Their opponents on the other hand, were far more critical, scoring 18 of their 25 attempts.

Double agony for women

It was a double-blow for the Toowoomba Mountaineers womens’ sides as the youth league women also suffered a semi-final defeat on Saturday, with the Moreton Bay Suns claiming an emphatic 82-53 win.

Fortunately for the Mountaineers, there was some consolation as the men’s youth league side booked its spot in the grand final with a 91-82 win over Ipswich.
