BOXING: Six simple words set Brendon Smith’s heart and mind at ease on Wednesday morning.
A text message “You won before the commission. The decision stands” from US lawyer Pat English told Smith they had won their latest ‘fight’ at the Ohio Athletic Commission.
Referee David Fields disqualified Love after he flipped Spark out of the ring during their title fight.
“It was great news to wake up to,” Smith said.
“A real relief for me and Steve.
“I thought it was a strange move from Montana to appeal the decision.
“It was a clear disqualification for me and I don’t want to think about things could’ve ended for Steve.
“But thankfully the referee’s decision to disqualify him (Montana Love) was upheld and now we can move on from it all.”
Smith said he was always confident Spark would retain the title he won in America, but until the result was officially handed down there was some doubt.
Spark had knocked Love down earlier in the fight and was in control before he was flipped over the ropes in a bizarre scene more suited to a WWE Royal Rumble match.
“Once we heard they were going to appeal the decision we jumped on the front foot,” Smith said.
“I didn’t think they (the Love camp) had a leg to stand with the appeal but this was like any fight – it’s not over until it’s over.
“I engaged Pat (English) who is one of the top boxing lawyers in America, he’s in the Hall of Fame, to represent us.
“We were never going to sit back and wait for the outcome.”
