BOXING: Christmas has come early for Steve Spark with Santa leaving a well deserved present under boxing star’s tree.

Spark’s WBA Intercontinental super lightweight title win against American Montana Love has rocketed the Toowoomba fighter up the world rankings.

The newly released International Boxing Federation rankings have Spark at No. 8 and his camp expect the soon to be released World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council rankings to reflect his new star status.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Spark said.

“I’ve been focused on this, achieving a top 10 world ranking, for a very long time.

“At the start of this year I set myself the goal of making the top 10 in more than one federation – I’m part of the way there now and I expect when the WBC and WBA rankings are released I should be in the top 10 there as well.”

Spark however is not satisfied with his new status.

‘The Viking’ believes his new IBF ranking is simply a reflection of his journey to date – a journey that is far from over.

“I’m proud of what my team and I achieved so far,” Spark said.

“We’ve stepped up to every challenge, taken the hard road every time, fought for everything we’ve achieved and it’s starting to pay off.

“I’ve fought on the biggest cards in Australia, went to America and won my first ever fight there and right now I am one of Australia’s greatest boxers.

“The way I see it though – there are seven fighters ahead of me in the IBF.

“I want a world title and to win one I have to go through those fighters and I’m ready for that.”

Spark is also very open about his favourite targets.

With a March return to the ring in mind, Spark has his sights set on Aussie Liam Paro or Englishman Robbie Davies Junior.

“Fighting Liam Paro just makes sense to me – it’s the fight that Australian boxing fans want,” Spark said.

“Robbie Davies Jr is another guy I’d love to fight as well and I’d go to England for that.

“I’d gladly fight in Liverpool in front of his fans and take that title off him.”
