Gatton and Wattles are sure things but who will join them in the TRL A-grade finals is anyone’s guess.
Six teams – Brothers, Valleys, Goondiwindi, Warwick, Dalby and Pittsworth – are in the hunt for those last three spots with six rounds of the regular season still to play.
Ahead of round 14 this Saturday we’ve identified the players from the current top eight sides who hold the keys to their team’s hopes of securing a finals berth.
Corey McGrady
Brothers
You’d be hard pressed to find a more experienced or talented playmaker in the competition. McGrady is a proven performer who steps up in the big moments.
Sam Betros
Brothers
Hitting form at the right time of the season. Back at his junior club the gun five-eighth has tormented opposition defences with his direct running and vision.
Lachlan Kennedy
Brothers
The edge forward has put his pack and team on his back this season, bending the line with brutally hard running to give his playmakers space to work. Kennedy is also among the competition’s best defenders.
Blake Cullen
Pittsworth
Sets the tone at lock with hard, consistent work on both sides of the ball.
Ted Stuart
Pittsworth
The star centre has seven tries to his name this season making him the Danes equal leading tryscorer alongside teammate Kyle Brose.
David Woodbridge
Pittsworth
After easing his way into the side via the interchange bench, Woodbridge has made the halfback spot his own. When Woodbridge is on song the Danes are a threat from just about anywhere on the field.
Josh Chappell
Dalby
Pulling the strings behind the Diehards forward pack, Chappell is one of the competition’s top halfbacks. Chappell’s pinpoint kicking sets up countless attacking opportunities and he can long when needed to get his team out of trouble.
Chris Woodbridge
Dalby
You can’t talk about TRL and not mention the two-time Webcke Price medallist. Woodbridge can score from anywhere on the field in the blink of an eye. To date Woodbridge is the competition’s leading try and second highest points scorer and the go-to man when a game is on the line.
Xavier Manley/Jarrod Wallace
Dalby
The running game of Manley and Wallace is the key to unlocking the full potential of star playmakers like Woodbridge and Chappell.
Oliver Bichel
Gatton
The hard-hitting lock can and will run all day. Bichel does his best work in the pack but has also proven himself a viable playmaker lining up at hooker and five-eighth in the past. One of Gatton’s best in recent years.
Brad Zampech
Gatton
Standing at more than 180cm tall and tipping the scales at more than 100kg the former backrower is now of the game’s most imposing centres. Zampech is fast, runs a great line and is hard to bring down.
Shannon Hicks
Gatton
An impact player off the bench. Jonathan Flint turns to the experienced and passionate Hicks when he needs to change the momentum of a game or to settle the troops.
Dwayne Duncan
Wattles
One Toowoomba Rugby League’s greatest ever playmakers. Duncan has the vision and skills to change any game in the blink with a deft pass or a pinpoint kick. The superstar five-eighth is also his side’s top try scorer with 11 this season – only Chris Woodbridge and Brad Zampech have scored my tries this season.
Tom Hatch
Wattles
With former NRL playmaker and current Wattles coach Travis Burns mentoring him, Hatch is shining after a positional switch this season. Moving from hooker to halfback he has slotted in perfectly alongside Duncan launching many a Wattles attacking raid.
Cooper Tate-Roche
Wattles
A consistent prop who sets the tone for his fellow forwards with big runs and hard hits. When Tate-Roche gets a roll Wattles are a hard team to stop.
Malik Woodbridge
Goondiwindi
A constant threat in the backline. Woodbridge is hard to contain and a constant threat in attack.
Jack Pattie
Goondiwindi
Cool, calm and collected, Pattie is the steadying hand the Boars need to succeed. A real threat out of dummy half he has 10 tries to his name this season.
David McGrady
Goondiwindi
The scheming halfback expertly steers his team around the park – pushing the pace when needed and spreading the ball wide to create opportunities for his teammates.
Nick Chapman
Warwick
Back in the squad in recent weeks, Chapman could be the spark the Cowboys’ backline needs in the run to the finals.
Charlie Christensen
Warwick
A proven and consistent performer in the second row, Christensen works hard on both sides of the ball.
Mitch Wilson
Warwick
The big lock is the beating heart of the Cowboys’ pack. He leads by example taking the hard runs out of his own end and is a top notch defender.
Koop Diment
Valleys
A constant performer in the Valleys’ forward pack, Diment has chipped in with a few tries this season as well.
Denzel Burns
Valleys
The skipper brings experience, leadership and direction. A quality halfback, Burns will be the man the Roosters look to over the next six weeks as they bid to secure a spot in the finals.
Will Hoey
Valleys
The electrifying fullback is Roosters’ leading try scorer this season. Roosters will need him to be at his best if they hope to grab a finals spot.
