Western Clydesdales in HostPlus Cup

LEAGUE: The opportunity to help rebuild a historic Queensland Rugby League club was impossible to pass on for Shane Sullivan.

The now former Northern Territory Rugby Union CEO has taken the reins of the Western Clydesdales ahead of their Hostplus Cup return next year and was excited by the journey ahead.

“It’s an honour and a privilege to be able to take on this role,” Sullivan said.

“I’ve spent the last two years rebuilding rugby union in the Northern Territory – putting systems and staff in place to grow the game and I feel we met the challenge.

“The fact that it is a new opportunity for everyone involved to rebuild the Clydesdales immediately appealed.

“There is a weight on all our shoulders with the history of the Clydesdales and the pride in the jersey but I believe we will be able to build on all that.

“Having family from the region is also an added bonus to accepting the position.”

In the space of just three days in the job Sullivan has met a number of past players and spoken with head coach Jason Alchin.

Sullivan said he was impressed with the squad Alchin had assembled and was confident they would be competitive.

With the future of the club on the field looking bright, Sullivan said his focus would be behind the scenes.

“Initially the focus is on building that structure behind the club,” he said.

“Creating a team behind the on-field teams so they can succeed.

“The longer term goals are ensuring financial stability and making sure the club is successful on and off the field so we can build the Western Clydesdales brand not just in the south west Queensland region but right across Queensland, Australia and beyond.”
