The Darling Downs and South West Queensland under-15 boys’ side flexed their muscle over the weekend as they dominated the South Queensland Cricket Conference Southern Hub, winning all three games on the way to the title.
The Darling Downs kickstarted its weekend with a thrilling eight-run win over Sunshine Coast, before showing its class with a solid six-wicket win against Wide Bay.
The home side then secured the title on Sunday with an impressive 43-run win over South East Queensland - much to the delight of DDSWQ coach Mark Alexander.
“It was a really good weekend of cricket, there were some excellent games across all zones and we actually played some really mature cricket and excelled in achieving our focus points,” he said.
“I have known a lot of these boys for a fair few years, I knew we’d be pretty strong.
“To win it, I think was a fair result for us and one that we deserved, I think we played the better cricket and closed out the games.
“The two T20s on Saturday were quite close and then on Sunday against SEQ we put 244 on the board batting first which is a really big total - that was a great platform for the boys to bowl at.”
“Overall I was very happy and it was well deserved.”
Alexander revealed the players who starred for his side and helped lead the team to victory.
“With the bat Jonas Brazier our little dynamite left-hander, he was excellent a little powerhouse and scores quick and bats without fear,” Alexander said.
“Ed Barwick with the ball, he got a five-fa on Sunday got a couple of wickets on Saturday as well.
“He had a great weekend as well.
“Then we had your hard workers, Dom Seaby with bat and ball was really good, Cormac Hass was strong all weekend, excellent in the field.
“Our skipper Jack Penfold had a solid weekend … he did a lot and held the boys together.
“In the past have relied on a couple of players to do the job, it was fair to say the love was spread out this weekend at some point in time.”
Alexander said his side had a major focus on running between wickets and fielding heading into the weekend, which put them in good stead across the three games.
“We ran hard for everything, they were up and about all weekend,” he said.
“Our fielding was huge and our strong running between wickets, I thought won us the games.”
